Case study · Wet Dream Charters

Now spearfishing guests see the page right away

Capt. Ben Covan runs spearfishing trips out of Stock Island. On a phone test, his old home page showed nothing for 11 seconds. We built him a new website that opens fast and says what he does up top.

What was wrong with the old site

His real photos and trips were there. The trouble was how long guests waited, and what they saw first.

  • Old site:

Slow to open on a phone

On PageSpeed's phone test, the home page showed nothing for 11 seconds, so there was nothing to tap. The main picture took 21.6 seconds.

  • Old site:

The page for his main trip was slow too

Nearly all his trips are spearfishing. That page scored 33 out of 100 on a phone, and its main picture took 15.7 seconds.

  • Old site:

No prices on the home page

A guest had to open the Charters page to see what a day cost.

  • Old site:

Nothing up top said spearfishing or Key West

The headline was the business name. A guest had to scroll to read what the trips were and where they left from.

  • Old site:

Every trip got the same space

Freediving, sandbars and kite surfing each got a long write-up, the same as spearfishing, even a trip he rarely runs. On a phone the home page ran about three times as long as the new one.

The spearfishing page

The old page gave its starting price in a paragraph. The new one sets the price, the trip lengths and the group size in a row under Book now.

Why it's easier to book now

Old site:A long wait on a phone

New site:A page that opens fast, even on a slow signal

A guest on a weak signal can reach Book now before giving up.

Old site:Just the business name up top

New site:Key West spearfishing charters with Captain Ben

A guest knows right away this is the right place.

Old site:Prices on another page

New site:Trips, lengths and prices on the home page

A guest can see what a day costs and tap Book now without hunting.

Old site:Four long write-ups, all the same size

New site:Spearfishing first, marked as what most guests book

Most guests want spearfishing, so they reach it first.

Old site:Reviews two screens down on a phone

New site:His Google rating on the first screen, then reviews that answer "First time spearfishing?"

Someone who has never met Ben sees that other guests trust him.

What Google sees now

His new site tells Google far more about each trip. Here's what changed.

Now

spearfishingkeywest.com

Key West Spearfishing Charters | Wet Dream Charters

Spearfishing, lobstering, freediving and sandbar charters in Key West, FL, with Captain Ben Covan. Private trips for up to 6. Book online.

  • The main heading says what he does

It used to be the business name. Now it says Key West spearfishing charters with Captain Ben.

  • Each trip has its own page

Freediving, sandbars and eco-tours used to share space with other trips. Each now has a page of its own, with Key West in the title.

  • Google can read each trip

Every trip page now spells out the trip, the town and the price in code made for Google. That code is called trip schema.

  • Old links still work

Every old address on spearfishingkeywest.com now lands on a real page, so a link someone saved still works.

  • Old template pages are gone from his domain

Several pages with template text left in were still listed for Google. On spearfishingkeywest.com they now go to his real pages.

The PageSpeed scores

PageSpeed tests a page the way a slow phone sees it. The old home page took 21.6 seconds to show its main picture. The new one takes 1.5, and it scores 100.

What we did on top

  • He saw his site before he paid

Nick sent Ben a working demo, hooked up to his real booking, before any money changed hands.

  • We went through all his photos

Ben shared 197 photos. We used 28 of the best, and no stock photos.

  • His last photos made it in

During the launch call he texted a better grouper shot and an amberjack. Both went in before the site went live.

  • His fishing reports came along

All five kept their addresses and his own words.
